The global competitiveness of Vietnam’s industry has increased 16 places within 10 years, from 58th place in 2009 to 42nd place in 2019 (according to UNIDO’s ranking), becoming the country with The fastest ranking increase among ASEAN countries, has approached the 5th position in the region (only 0.0015 points behind the Philippines) and is closer to the group of 4 most competitive countries in ASEAN.

In the 10-year strategic period 2011-2020, industry is the industry with the highest growth rate among the national economic sectors with approximately 30% contribution to GDP and becomes the main export industry of the country. , contributing to bringing Vietnam from the 50th position (in 2010) to the 22nd position (in 2019) among the world’s largest exporting countries.

Up to now, Vietnam has formed a number of key industries of the economy such as: Exploiting and processing oil and gas; electronics, telecommunications, information technology; metallurgy, iron and steel; cement and building materials; textiles, leather and footwear; mechanical engineering, automobiles, motorcycles…, creating an important foundation for long-term growth, as well as promoting the process of modernization and industrialization of the country.

In addition, the process of industrial restructuring associated with growth model innovation and labor productivity improvement has increasingly focused on the core of industrialization. The internal structure of the industry has changed positively. The proportion of the mining industry in GDP has continuously decreased (from 9.1% in 2010 to about 8.1% in 2016 and only 5.55% in 2020).

The processing and manufacturing industry has become the main growth engine of the whole industry. In 2020, the processing and manufacturing industry plays a key role in leading the growth of the economy with an increase of 5.82%.

Considering the period 2011 – 2020, the group of processing and manufacturing industries has been constantly expanding and accounted for the highest proportion in industries with its contribution to GDP increasing continuously over the years (up from 13% in 2010). to 14.27% in 2016; 16.48% in 2019 and about 16.7% in 2020).

Supporting industries are interested in promoting and strengthening linkages, especially in Vietnam’s key manufacturing industries such as textiles and garments, leather and footwear, electronics, agricultural product processing industry, etc. to form a supporting industry ecosystem and increase the localization rate.

Product structure has had a positive shift when the proportion of high and medium-tech products in Vietnam has increased significantly, creating the basis for the formation of a number of large-scale and capable private industrial groups. compete in the international market.

The proportion of processed exports in total export value increases from 65% in 2016 to 85% in 2020; The proportion of export value of high-tech products increased from 44.3% in 2016 to 49.8% in 2020.

Along with activities to attract investment with the participation of many large economic groups and leading multinational companies in Vietnam, domestic enterprises have also developed strongly, in which has formed and developed large economic groups operating in the fields of basic industry, materials, mechanical engineering… such as Viettel, Vingroup, Truong Hai, Thanh Cong, Hoa Phat… , has created a foundation for supporting industries, helping Vietnam gradually participate more deeply in the global production network and value chain./.
